Joanna first became interested in the Alexander Technique when she developed RSI problems while studying the flute at music college. She was immediately intrigued by the fact that she felt so much better after lessons, more energized, poised, confident and relaxed. With a son just a few months old, her Alexander sessions helped her deal with the tiredness and stress she was feeling. How could an Alexander session do all this? And even better, she was learning how to do this for herself. Her RSI steadily improved as she learned a more integrated way to use her mind and body.
She later trained for three years at the Alexander Technique Institute in Boulder, Colorado, where the training includes 16 hrs per week of hands on practice. Yoga is used as a means of understanding functional anatomy and it was at this time that she fell in love with both Yoga and Ayurveda. She qualified in Alexander Technique in 1995.
The Alexander work can be helpful for anything from stress and backache to running the marathon or singing an opera, or simply to improve quality of life and is useful for children and teenagers as well as the elderly. It’s like the operating manual for your mind and body. Jo prefers not to specialise in any particular area making the work more challenging and creative for her.
Ayurvedic
Jo gained her degree in Ayurvedic Medicine in 2004. Ayurveda compliments Alexander Technique since both are focused on finding balance in the mind and body. She now offers Ayurvedic diet and lifestyle consultations in addition to Alexander Technique sessions.
